How to Host a Modded Minecraft Server
The easy part is starting a server. The important part is making the loader, Minecraft version, mods, and configuration agree with each other.
Set it up in this order
- 1
Match the exact Minecraft version
A 1.20.1 mod does not become a 1.20.4 mod because its filename looks similar. Start with the Minecraft version named by the modpack or the mods your group has installed.
- 2
Choose the loader the pack was made for
Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge are separate ecosystems. Use the loader in the modpack’s server files or manifest—do not mix them because a mod happens to share a name across loaders.
- 3
Use the server pack when there is one
A server pack normally contains the correct launch scripts, configs, and server-side mods. It is safer than uploading the client’s entire mods folder, which often includes client-only mods.
- 4
Give the pack enough RAM
Use 4 GB for small packs, around 6 GB for medium packs, and 8–12 GB for large packs. More is not automatically faster; it is headroom for the mods and world your group actually uses.
- 5
Keep client and server mods aligned
Every required common mod must be on both sides at compatible versions. Client-only mods belong on players’ computers; server-only tools belong on the server.
Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge?
There is no universal winner. The correct loader is the one your pack needs. If you are choosing mods yourself, start by listing the handful of mods that define your server, then see which loader and Minecraft version all of them support together.
Learn more about Forge hosting, Fabric hosting, and NeoForge hosting. For RAM, use the Minecraft server RAM guide; for what a modded server costs per month, the cost guide has the per-size table. Running plugins instead of mods? That is a different choice: Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur.
When the server does not start, do not just press Start again.
Read the first loader error, check the named mod and its dependency, then fix one mismatch at a time. Not sure what the log is telling you? Paste it into the free crash log analyzer and it names the likely cause and the fix. Alpenglow’s console explains the same failures in plain language while the server boots.

Can I upload my client modpack directly to a server?+
Sometimes, but it is not the best first choice. Client packs often contain graphics, UI, and performance mods that cannot run on a dedicated server. Use the pack’s official server pack whenever it provides one.
Why does my modded server crash before anyone joins?+
The usual causes are a missing dependency, a mod for the wrong Minecraft or loader version, a client-only mod in the server mods folder, or a config/datapack that references a missing mod. Read the first clear loader error rather than the final stack trace, or paste the whole log into the free crash log analyzer on this site to get the likely cause named.
Should I use Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge?+
Use what the modpack requires. For a custom pack, choose based on the mods you want: Forge and NeoForge support many large content packs, while Fabric is often lighter and updates quickly. Do not choose a loader first and hope the mods follow.
